German plastics processor HESS plastics, a specialist in technical and decorative components for the automotive industry, has entered insolvency proceedings, providing another indication of the growing pressure on European automotive suppliers. Karl Hess GmbH & Co. KG filed for insolvency with the Siegen District Court on 24 July 2026. On 27 July, the court ordered provisional insolvency administration and appointed Nikolaos Antoniadis as provisional insolvency administrator. Operations are continuing. Production, development activities and customer deliveries are being maintained, while financing for ongoing operations is secured for the coming months. At the same time, a structured process has been launched to identify a potential investor. HESS plastics has a history spanning approximately 75 years and specialises in the development and production of plastic components, injection moulding, toolmaking and various surface-finishing technologies. The company processes more than 6,000 tonnes of plastics annually and employs around 550 people internationally. Approximately 75% of its business is linked to the automotive sector. HESS operates two main locations: Neunkirchen in Germany and Pilsen in the Czech Republic. The German operation focuses, among other areas, on specialised technologies and processes, while the Czech facility is geared towards volume production. The company is also known within the automotive industry for decorative components featuring so-called "piano black" surfaces, which have been widely used in vehicle interiors. According to available information, the company's financial difficulties are closely linked to deteriorating conditions in the European automotive industry. Lower customer order volumes have coincided with persistently high energy and raw material costs, putting additional pressure on energy-intensive plastics processing operations such as injection moulding. The significance of the HESS plastics case extends beyond the company itself. Europe's automotive components industry is undergoing a period of substantial restructuring, driven by lower production volumes, technological transformation among vehicle manufacturers, cost pressures and increasing international competition. For plastics processors with high exposure to the automotive sector, declining orders can quickly affect capacity utilisation and profitability. The HESS case therefore illustrates how weakness in the German and wider European automotive industry can spread through the supply chain to specialised plastics processors and component manufacturers. For the moment, the insolvency proceedings do not mean the end of HESS plastics' operations. The continuation of production and the ongoing investor process will be decisive for the company's future.
